Gertie is great at being THE LITTLEST YAK, with the CURLIEST, WHIRLIEST wool and the GRIPPIEST of hooves for clip-clopping up cliffs. Only, Gertie doesn’t want to be the littlest. She’s in a rush to grow up and be just like THE BIG YAKS. But what if there are some things that only a GERTIE can do? A gorgeous story celebrating YOU being perfect…just the way you are!

Kent-based theatre company, LAStheatre, bring The Littlest Yak to the stage in spectacular fashion. Join them for a dazzling adventure, into the heart of the Himalayas, that is sure to get even the grumpiest of yaks into the festive spirit.

Creative Process

As part of the creative process for The Littlest Yak, LAStheatre created Yakety Yak - a pen-pal project pairing children in Folkestone with Himalayan yaks.
Through theatre games and a playful exchange of letters, 118 Year 1 pupils across three primary schools (All Souls, Cheriton & Morehall Primary) explored self-esteem, pride in place and the joy of words. The project encouraged children to share stories about themselves, their communities and the world around them, while developing confidence in storytelling, public speaking and creative expression.
As part of the development process, early versions of the production toured to libraries across Hampshire in partnership with The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, allowing us to test and develop elements of the show with live audiences ahead of its premiere at the Marlowe Theatre.
To ensure our young collaborators in Folkestone could experience the production, we also hosted a free sharing performance at Folkestone Quarterhouse.
This collaborative development process helped shape the emotional world and spirit of The Littlest Yak, ensuring the production was created in conversation with the young people and communities it was made for.
