Caspian the crab is small in stature but has a BIG curiosity. Happy in his rockpool home, Caspian loves cleaning and collecting stories from passing squid and curious sea snails.

But when humans come and build a town (called Crabbiton) near his rockpool, everything changes! Our nervous hero finds himself thrust into the spotlight and off on an adventure of his own.

Packed with puppetry, music, and plenty of silliness, Caspian’s Storm is a fast-paced interactive musical for everyone aged 3+ about how we are never too small to make a difference.

Creative Process

As part of the creative process for Caspian’s Storm, LAStheatre worked with over 250 children across Cliftonville, Drapers Mills, Palm Bay and Northdown Primary Schools in Margate.
With local illustrator Maddy Vian, pupils created a collaborative artwork celebrating the biodiversity and living things of Thanet. Alongside composer Tom Adams, they made instruments from objects collected during a beach clean - thanks to Rise Up Clean Up for their support. Using these handmade instruments, the children created a sea-inspired soundscape which plays as audiences arrive for the show.
Pupils also joined forces to become the children of Crabbiton - recordings of their voices can be heard throughout the live production.
As part of the wider project, planned rockpooling activities were postponed due to local sewage discharge, reflecting many of the environmental themes explored in the show itself. In partnership with Thanet Coast, the activity was later reimagined as a Sea Safari.
Together, these workshops rooted Caspian’s Storm in the voices, creativity and coastal landscape of Thanet - connecting the production to the community and environment that inspired it.
